The results of generations of neglect and racism shown here (as well as the pride and strength of the OMD people) are mirrored in other countries that have seen European invasion impact on Indigenous people. Alcohol is a major factor in most of the assaults here and elsewhere - Alcohol (fire water) is a symptomatic agent, not a causal one. Aboriginal people still survive, still maintain dignity, humour, self-respect and culture, despite conditions and treatment that would simply not be tolerable to other 'Australians'. 'Australia' can do much better in regard to its treatment of Indigenous people and the cost is negligible compared to current social costs. We are facing a crisis that can only be overcome by new approaches and attitudes to a situation spawned by racism and paternalism. |
